Free Press sports writer Dave Birkett breaks down the NFC North matchup between the Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears:

Lions (4-6) at Bears (7-3)
Kickoff: 12:30 p.m. Thursday; Ford Field, Detroit.

Lions run offense vs. Bears run defense
Rookie running back Kerryon Johnson won’t play Thursday because of a knee injury, and his absence is a huge blow to an offense that needs to generate a rushing attack to keep Chicago’s fierce pass rush at bay.

LeGarrette Blount, Zach Zenner and Theo Riddick will share the workload in Johnson’s absence, but none of those backs are equipped to be an every-down option. Blount is averaging a disappointing 2.3 yards per carry, but has been effective near the goal line. Riddick remains a receiving threat and not much else. And while Zenner might be the back most equipped to handle 12 or 14 carries, he’s not a threat to break a big play.

The Bears have held four straight opponents under 100 yards rushing and stifled Johnson and the Lions’ rushing attack (76 yards) in their meeting earlier this month. Akiem Hicks is a gap destroyer up front, and linebackers Danny Trevathan and rookie Roquan Smith fly around the field.

Edge: Bears

The Bears sacked Matthew Stafford six times in their Nov. 11 meeting, and unless the Lions get their screen game going or do something to create more misdirection, Chicago will be primed to get to Stafford on Thursday.

Along with Johnson, the Lions will be without wide receiver Marvin Jones (knee) for the second straight game. That means Kenny Golladay is the Lions’ lone high-caliber receiver. TJ Jones hasn’t done much in extended snaps since the trade of Golden Tate, and Bruce Ellington has been around less than three weeks, though he’s probably the Lions’ best option in the slot.

More: Lions’ hurry-up offense could be answer to solve Bears’ defense

All-Pro linebacker Khalil Mack has two sacks against the Lions already this year, and he and Hicks have terrorized offensive lines all season. The Bears lead the NFL with 27 takeaways and 18 interceptions, and could use Kyle Fuller, who’s in the midst of a Pro Bowl year, to shadow Golladay,
Bears run offense vs. Lions run defense
The Lions have found a magic potion for their leaky run defense as they’ve held their last two opponents, the Bears and Panthers, to a combined 110 yards on the ground.

Damon Harrison’s presence at nose tackle has been a big part of the improvement, but really it comes down to not allowing big plays. The Lions have allowed five runs of 40-plus yards this season, second most in the NFL, but they haven’t allowed a carry longer than 10 yards the last two weeks.

Jordan Howard managed just 21 yards on 11 carries in the first meeting with the Lions and has had a relatively quiet season as the Bears have transitioned to an outside zone rushing scheme. Tarik Cohen is the Bears’ gadget back.

Edge: Bears

Trubisky suffered a right shoulder injury in the Bears’ Sunday night win over the Minnesota Vikings and is not expected to play on Thursday. He threw for a career-high 355 yards against the Lions earlier this month, and is a true dual-threat with his legs.

Overall
The Bears are coming off an emotional Sunday night win over a division rival and have an unusually short turnaround for a Thursday afternoon game. Their quarterback is ailing and they’re on the road. Ordinarily, that would make them a prime candidate for an upset. But the Lions just don’t have enough offense right now to get the job done. Johnson’s injury is killer for a team that has played well only when it has been able to run the ball. Throw in the fact that No. 2 receiver Marvin Jones will not play because of his knee, and the passing game was already depleted after the trade of Tate, and I just don’t think the Lions have the guns to take down one of the NFL’s best defenses on Thanksgiving.
